News Item:
Shooting victim was asleep in living room when stepson got gun
A funeral service for Frank R.M. DuBois, the 44-year-old Alma man who died Friday after police said his 7-year-old stepson accidentally shot him, will be held on Thursday at Berry Funeral Home in Shepherd.
DuBois was born Aug. 15, 1971, the son of Fred and LeNora (Hooper) DuBois.
He loved to work on his brothers dairy farm. He also loved gardening, hunting, and - above all - his children.
DuBois is survived by his wife Sarah DuBois of Alma; his children Amber DuBois, Logan DuBois, Kaleb Nelson, Caiden Nelson, and Emma DuBois; his father Fred (Rose) DuBois of Mt. Pleasant; his mother LeNora Dubois of Shepherd; his three siblings Elton (Amanda) DuBois of St. Louis, Delphine (Jaime) Howe of Alma, and Donna Kandaris of Mt. Pleasant; his mother and father-in-law John and Betty Nelson of Alma; his brother-in-law Robert (Greta Keeler) Nelson of Stanton; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded by his grandparents.
The funeral service for DuBois is set for 11 a.m. Thursday, with Randall Roose officiating. There will be a visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
DuBois was sleeping in his living room in the early hours Friday when he was shot and killed as his 7-year-old stepson played with a high-powered rifle taken from a locked gun cabinet in the same room, Alma police said on Monday.
He was dead at the scene from a single gunshot from the rifle, police said.
Police said the boys mom was asleep in the couples bedroom and a younger sister in her bedroom as the stepson who may or may not have been asleep before getting up just after midnight found keys to the cabinet, unlocked it and began playing with the rifle.
He found the key to the gun cabinet and unlocked it and, unfortunately, pulled the trigger on a loaded gun, said Alma Detective Jason Biehl in providing additional details on Monday.
Biehl said the key to the gun cabinet, which had a couple other weapons in it, was kept in different spots inside the home at various times.
While the case isnt officially closed autopsy results and crime lab analysis are still pending Biehl said there isnt additional investigation being pursued.
I dont know for certain that it couldnt take another turn, but I feel that we know how it happened, Biehl said.
Police were called to the familys home, on Penrith Avenue southeast of downtown, about 12:25 a.m. Friday.
Nearby residents on the two-block street, which runs south off Ely, awoke Friday to city police, state police and an ambulance on the scene, where the house was taped off with crime scene tape.
Biehl said Alma police have no history of calls to the home and have not had prior contact with the stepfather or others who live there.
