Marlene R. Manis, age 81, of Toledo, passed away peacefully Monday, January 18, 2016 at the Franciscan Care Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 4, 1934 to Robert and Edna (Krieger) Miller in Toledo. Marlene was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She worked as an office manager for Lowry Manufacturing for 17 years, Bankers Life and Casualty, and other various jobs. She loved to play bingo, to read, music and playing the piano, garage sales, gardening, and spending time with her family. Marlene was an avid horsewoman and owned a horse stable at one time. She enjoyed riding bareback or barrel racing, and going to the racetrack with her grandson, Brian.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Marlene is survived by her children, Marcia Miller, Karen James, and Carl (Lisa) Manis; grandchildren, Brian (Adrienne Zilliox) Wolniewicz, Andrea (Derek) Brock, Ashley (Ryan) Spuhler, Vicki Hartzell, and Jeanne Laffartha; great-grandchildren, Marissa, Jordan, Dustin, Isabella, Cody, Courtney, Colton, Paige, and Maddox; and cousin, Nancy; who was like a sister to her.
The family will receive guests on Thursday, January 21, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. � 2:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home � SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900) with Funeral Services beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Nuptial Mass Celebrated for Couple
EW LOTHROP - The Rev. Fr. Michael H. Wolf celebrated the nuptial Mass for Geraldine J. Wendling, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wendling, and Dale S. Bitterman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Bitterman, in Maple Grove St. Michael Church Saturday. The bride was attired in an embroidered net over taffeta bouffant skirted gown, styled with a Sabrina neckline. Her fingertip illusion veil was secured with a crown. She carried red roses centered with a white orchid. Ruth Wendling served her cousin as maid of honor. The bridesmaids were, Mrs. Philip Wendling, Karen Bitterman. Junior bridesmaid was Linda Wendling; and the flower girl was Beverly Bitterman. The attendants wore silk organza over taffeta dresses and carried colonial bouquets. Dr. James Bitterman of St. Louis, Mo., was his brother's best man. Ushers were John Bitterman, Donald Wendling, and Philip Wendling. The newlyweds will make their home in Chesaning. They greeted 400 guests at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Chesaning for a reception.

Obituary:
Joseph H. Verhoff, 77, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Columbus Grove, died July 12, 2009, at Tidwell Hospice House, surrounded by his family.
He was born July 2, 1932, in Columbus Grove to George and Charlotte Kissell Verhoff, who preceded him in death. On Dec. 27, 1952, he married Gladys M. Myers, who survives in Sarasota, Fla.
Mr. Verhoff attended Columbus Grove High School. He was an Air Force veteran serving during the Korean War. He co-owned and operated Verhoff Lumber Co. before becoming postmaster at the Van Buren Post Office. He and his wife retired to Sarasota, Fla., in 1995. He was a life member of American Legion Post 516 Columbus Grove. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church and a former member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Columbus Grove.
His laughter and smile were contagious. He was always willing to lend a hand to those in need and put others before himself. He cherished life's many gifts to the fullest and was kind, gentle and warmhearted. He loved playing cards, spending time with his family, volunteering for Meals on Wheels and attending church. He would never back away from a good conversation, especially politics and sports. He had a very big heart and will be greatly missed.
Survivors also include two sons, David (Vickie) Verhoff, of Sarasota, Fla., and Joseph (Pam) Verhoff, of Defiance; three daughters, Angela (Ed) Howell, of Pandora, Rose (Brian) Hovest, of Tallmadge, and Debra (Mike) Reed, of Columbus Grove; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jim Verhoff and George Verhoff, both of Columbus Grove, and Dick Verhoff, of Sycamore; a sister, Madalyn (Butch) Donaldson, of Columbus Grove; and two sisters-in-law, Eloise Verhoff and Phyllis Verhoff, both of Columbus Grove.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob and Ted Verhoff; and a sister, Judy (Lowell) Steele.
