Widow of Owosso Township Supervisor Lies Down on Track

Engineer Sees Herr; But Not in Time to Stop His Train
Mrs. Mary Doepker, 59 - years old, widow of Lewis J. Doepker, Owosso Township Supervisor, who died on July 25,. ended her Life on Thursday afternoon by lying down between the rails on the Grand Trunk tracks, about three miles west of Owosso and permitting a freight train to hit her. She succumbed to her injuries at about 4:30 o'clock slightly more than an hour later, in Memorial Hospital.
Dr G. L. Cramer, Coroner, pronounced it a case of suicide, and said there would, be no inquest.
Mrs. Doepker had been mentally unbalanced at times for the past four years and once had been a patient in the Michigan State Hospital at Pontiac. Another petition asking for her re-admission to that hospital had been filed in Probate Court and she was waiting until she could be admitted.
Evades Housekeeper
Thursday afternoon, Mrs. Doepker's housekeeper, Mrs. Lillian Nealson, completed the housework, including the baking of some bread, and Mrs. Doepker told her she had better go upstairs and lie down for a time. Mrs. Nealson did so, and it is believed that as soon as she went upstairs Mrs. Doepker left the house located about 80 rods South of the present M-21 and on the former route of that trunk line.
Her only son, Gilbert, was working in the fields at the farm but did not see her leave the place. She evidently walked north to M-21, thence east and turned down a lane west of the Thomas Dwyer farm, to the Grand Trunk tracks and lay down between the rails. How long she lay there before the train came along is not known. The engineer told Dr. Cramer that he saw her before the train struck her but not in time to stop. Her body was pushed off the track and her skull fractured and her chest crushed.
The unconscious woman was identified by Mr.Dwyer and her son was notified. They accompanied her to the hospital where she died without regaining consciousness.
