Ell Pickett, 73, died Sunday at his home, 1132 Merritt-st., S. E. Born in Ashland township, Newaygo county, Mr. Pickett had resided in Newaygo 12 years before coming here 7 years ago. He was employed by the Niagara Lumber Co. Surviving are the widow, Emma; a daughter, Darlene, at home; a stepdaughter, Mrs. D. A. Bates of Grand Rapids; three sisters, Mrs. Etta Whitney of Bailey, Mrs. Theda Hutchinson of Muskegon Heights and Mrs. Fred Miller of Grand Rapids, and one brother, John Pickett of Newaygo. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. rn. Tuesday in the McKinley chapel at Grant. Burial will be in Seaman cemetery near Grant.

Thomas W. DeKam, aged 55, of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 1983 in Tuscon, AZ. Surving are his wife, Sally of St. Croix; his children, Pamela and Daniel Burns of Rome, NY, Deborah and Richard Daniels of Wyoming, MI, Steven and Laura DeKam of Grand Rapids, Denise DeKam of Grand Rapids, his grandchildren; one sister, Joyce and Robert Brinks of Grand Rapids; one brother, Robert and Muriel DeKam of Tuscon, AZ; nieces and nephews. Entombment St. Croix, V.I. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

ST. LOUIS - Andrew Komperda, 82, of 1259 E. Lincoln Road, died Thursday at Gratiot Community Hospital, Alma. He had been in poor health for several weeks. A native of Poland, he came to the United States in 1909 and moved to St. Louis from Chicago in 1924. He was a retired farmer and is suvived by three sons, Paul, Walter and Joseph, all of rural St. Louis; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Kanitz of rural Alma and Mrs. Charles Bruskotter of Lansing; a brother, Joseph of Poland; 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Carter Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kenneth Kanitz of Alma. Surviving are the husband. Andrew; three sons. Paul of Alma. Waiter and Joe. both of St. Louis; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Kanitz of Alma and Mrs. Charles Bruskotter of Mt. Pleasant: a brother. Joe Vorcak of St. Louis. and two brothers and a sister in Czechoslovakia. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.

Harvey Lee Shaftner, 75, 631 S. Main St., Urbana, died Sunday, April 18, 1993, at 4:40 am. in Mercy Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 3, 1917, in Springfield, a son of Noble and Victore (Blevins) Shaftner. He retired from Midland Ross Grimes Division as manager of engineering after 25 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the 100 First Calvary Division. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Urbana, a 50-year member of Harmony Lodge 8 F&AM, Elks 132, Bellefontaine, a former member of the Urbana Country Club, Boy Scouts of America, Junior Achievement and Lions Club, Urbana. Survivors include his wife, Virginia (Fenchel-Skeels) Shaftner, whom he married Nov. 2, 1940; one son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Cindi Shaftner, Lansing, Mich.; one daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. James (Cynthia) Martin, Upper Arlington; five grandchildren, Anthony Warye, Paul Harvey Warye, Karen Shaftner, Laura Shaftner and Mark Shaftner; two sisters, Carmen Smith, Indian Lake, and Dorothy Meeks, New Carlisle; one brother, Robert Shaftner, Bowling Green, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Shaftner. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Walter-Schoedinger Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Hilkerbaumer officiating. Burial will be in Oak Dale Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home, where Masonic services will be held at 5:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to PAWS Animal Shelter or the Cancer Association of Champaign County.

VIRGINIA 0. SHAFTNER 83, of 7041 Bent Tree Boulevard, Columbus, Ohio, died Monday, January 28, 2002 in her residence. She was born September 20, 1918 in Akron, Ohio, to Walter and Margaret (Mossor) Fenchel. She was retired as a Customer Service Representative for Columbia Gas Company. She graduated from Grandview High School in 1936 and attended Ohio State University. Survivors include her children, Philip (Cindi) Shaftner of Lansing, Michigan, Cynthia L. (James A.) Martin of Dublin, Ohio; grandchildren, Tony (Erica) Warye, Paul Warye, Karen Shaftner, Laura (Clifford) Weller, Mark Shaftner, Steve Martin; great-grandchildren, William Shaftner, Carmen Weller and Dylan Weller. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Ralph Skeels and husband. Virginia was a member of the Urbana Country Club, active in the Champaign County Humane Society, Senior Citizens Center, Champaign County Fair and worked with the children at the Caring Kitchen. She was the founder of the Rose Sale for Child Culture Club, was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, enjoyed bridge club, golfing and bowling. She was an avid reader and had a published article in the Ladies Home Journal. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 30,2002 from 5-8 p.m. in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, A Dignity Memorial Provider, 642 South Main Street, Urbana, Ohio where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2002 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kevin Horrigan officiating. Burial in Oak Dale Cemetery. Contributions may be made in Virginia's memory to Paws Animal Shelter, 1535 West U.S. Highway 36, Urbana, Ohio 43078.
