Dodge Kenneth Robert [Male] b. 9 MAY 1938 Ewen, MI - d. 9 AUG 2010 Munson Medical Center, Traverse City, MI
Obituary
Kenneth Robert Dodge, 72, of Traverse City, died Monday, August 9, 2010, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by family and friends. Ken had struggled for many years with poor health as a result of complications of diabetes and today is whole again with his Lord and Savior, Jesus.
Born in Ewen, Michigan on May 9, 1938, to Marion L. Dodge and the former Lois Z. Russell, Kens family moved to Cadillac early in his childhood and he spent much of his life in the Cadillac area. Ken attended Cadillac High School where he was an award-winning athlete in football, tennis, and basketball and was very involved in music. Ken played the lead role in many of the high school musicals. He graduated in 1956, after which he attended Michigan State University.
On October 10, 1959 Ken married the former Patricia I. Proffitt of Cadillac.
After making cheese at the Kraft Co. in Cadillac while in high school, Ken had a varied work career. He taught high school in Ida, Michigan, and then became an insurance adjuster for Citizens Insurance for many years. In 1972, Ken and Pat purchased a music store in Cadillac. Together they operated Dodges Cadillac Music Store for 10 years. Drawing on Kens musical knowledge and ability as a gifted pianist, Ken sold pianos and organs and gave private lessons to many students in the Cadillac area. During this time Ken and Pat were well known for their beautiful gospel singing in many churches in the area. After the store closed in 1982, Ken worked selling solar heating equipment in the Milwaukee area and for many years worked for Kwik Trip convenience stores in southern Wisconsin.
Ken was a member of the Michigan State University Mens Glee Club. He was an ardent and devoted fan of MSU athletics, especially basketball and football. He was a gifted music and choir director at several churches, including First Baptist Church and First United Methodist Church in Cadillac, the Evangelical and Reformed United Church of Christ in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Christ United Methodist Church in Traverse City. He was a member of the Cadillac Arts Council, the Cadillac Footlighters, Cadillac Jaycees, and was instrumental in obtaining funding for the building of the Cadillac High School auditorium and tennis courts.
Ken had a passion for words, books, and music. He read extensively and in particular was a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien and Lewis Carrolls works. He loved classical music. He loved Northern Michigan and its beautiful lakes, especially Torch Lake, near which his parents had grown up and where he spent a great deal of time. Ken loved to converse with family and friends about many topics including sports, music, the Bible, and politics. His wit, sarcasm, and odd nicknames for many around him will be greatly missed. Kens strong Christian faith was central to his life, and over the years he taught many Bible studies and Sunday school classes at many different churches he attended.
Survivors include Krystn Madrine and husband Steve Dahm of Bellefonte, PA, and her children Brynne, Arthur, and Trevor; Kraig and Melissa Dodge of Newaygo, MI, and their children Malachi, Elizabeth, and Jonah; and Sarah Schieber and husband Jim Hrabal of St. Louis, MI, and her children Abigayle, Noah, and Micah. Ken is also survived by four step-grandchildren as well as his former wife and good friend Patricia Dodge, his former mother-in-law Agnes Proffitt, his brother Russell Dodge and wife Gail of Clio, four nieces, and special friends John and Kim Schaub of Traverse City, and their daughters Megan and Melissa. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and special son-in-law Chad Schieber.
A celebration of Kens life will be held on Friday, August 13, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Cadillac. Family will receive visitors beginning at 6:00 pm, with the celebration of Kens life beginning at 6:30. A dessert fellowship will follow. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions be made to the Kenneth Dodge Memorial Book Fund at the Cadillac-Wexford Public Library at 411 S. Lake St., Cadillac MI 49601, or to the family at 1077 Hillcrest Dr., Boon, MI 49618. Please visit Kens webpage at www.lifestorynet.com to sign the online guest book and share a message or memory with his family. Life Story Funeral Home, Traverse City handled the cremation.
