Bruskotter Melvin James* [Male] b. 18 OCT 1944 Alma, Gratiot, MI - d. 21 APR 2007 Big Rapids, Mecosta, MI

Burial mausoleum, Oak Grove Cemetery, St Louis, Gratiot, MI

Obituary:
Melvin James Bruskotter, managing editor of the Big Rapids Pioneer in Big Rapids, Michigan, died of natural causes unexpectedly Saturday evening at home.
James was born in Alma, Michigan, the son of Melvin and Lelah (Harrison) Bruskotter, and graduated from St. Louis High School in 1963. Jim graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in journalism and later attended Michigan State University. Jim was employed with the Ingham County News, the Alma Daily Record Leader and the Macomb Daily before beginning his career as managing editor with Pioneer Publications in 1971. On July 20 of the same year, Jim married Shirley Gleim, who survives.
Jim served as an editor for the Pioneer and The Pioneer Group's affiliate publications for more than 36 years. As managing editor, he authored thousands of editorials and helped coordinate the use of news stories between the Pioneer and the weekly newspapers the Lake County Star and Pioneer Osceola Edition.
His efforts helped earn numerous awards from The Associated Press and the Michigan Press Association for news coverage, photography and opinion writing. Bruskotter was a newsroom leader who served as a mentor to young journalists who began their careers in Big Rapids, Pioneer Group Chairman Jack Batdorff said.
Jim was a member and past president of the Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce, a member of St. Paul's Campus Parish, and a member of the Mecosta County Historical Society. He also was a member of the Big Rapids Historical Preservation Commission and enjoyed working on the history of Big Rapids and with the Sesquicentennial Committee. Jim also was instrumental in editing "School Days Gone By," a book written by Kathleen Curtis and Geraldine Sturdavant.
In his spare time, Jim enjoyed Saturday morning rides with his wife, walking "Corey" the family dog, golfing and bowling, where he was a member of a league for many years.
Pioneer Publisher John Norton remembered Jim as a consummate journalist and invaluable member of the editorial board. "Jim was a journalist's journalist, a true newsman who cared deeply for the common man, our readers," Norton said. "I'll miss our sparring over editorial positions, as we didn't always see eye to eye on topics, but I always respected Jim's opinion. He was a person of strong convictions."
Along with his wife, Jim is survived by his daughter, Sarah (Mark) Haase of Kalamazoo; three sons, Jeremy (Liz) Bruskotter of Minnesota, Eric Bruskotter of Grand Rapids and Joshua Bruskotter of Big Rapids; granddaughter, Macy Ann Haase; two sisters, Nancy (Richard) Hrabel of Breckenridge and Julie (Don) Merkel of New York; and several nieces and nephews. His parents and a nephew, John Hrabal, preceded Jim in death.
