1940 Census, Lansing, Ingham, MI1950 Census, Lansing, Ingham, MIWedding announcement, Lansing JournaIObituary:
Gorman, Jean Cecelia, aged 83, passed away on May 5, 2019. It was sudden for her family but perhaps right on time for her. Jean was not one for lingering and wanted to live life to the fullest and then, as she told her children, "I will be ready to meet God."
Jean was born on October 23, 1935 in Lansing, MI as part of the first surviving set of triplets in Ingham County. She was the smallest of the three, not expected to survive, but she did and thrived. She went to St. Marys College and Michigan State University, but left before graduating to marry Tom Gorman and started a family that Jean and Tom didnt seem to know how to stop. Seven children later, she went back to college to finish her degree, and once her kids left the house, she went back again and got a masters degree in social work.
The theme of family continued with waves of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean was a beacon of affirmation for her grandkids, laughing uproariously at their jokes, clapping at every somersault and always on call for a hug. While family defined her life, Alcoholics Anonymous saved it. She was sober for 46 years and an inspiration/rock star to those struggling with the addiction. She was the embodiment of love in action.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tom and two siblings, Mary and Joe. She is survived by three siblings (Dave, Jim and Eileen), seven children (Elizabeth Schweger, Jim Gorman, Kathleen OLeary, Colleen Gorman, Kevin Gorman, Dan Gorman and Mike Gorman), seven in-laws she adored, 17 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St., SE, Grand Rapids on May 11, 2019 with visitation from 10 am 11 am followed by an 11 am service. A reception lunch will immediately follow at Clark Retirement Community, 1551 Franklin St. SE, Grand Rapids. In lieu of flowers, Jean would appreciate a donation in her name to Our Hope Association, a women's recovery center in Grand Rapids.
