Alma Woman is killed in Auto Crash Thursday
Mrs. Kendall Stinchcomb Dies and Mrs. Hyde Injured as Car Runs into Truck.
Mrs. Kendall Stinchcomb, 22 years old, of Alma, lost her life and her sister, Mrs. Frank Hyde, 25, of Riverdale, lies seriously injured at Carney-Wilcox Hospital, as the result of a tragic accident which took place last Thursday evening about 7:30 o'clock just west of Alma on M-46.
Mr. and Mrs. Hyde and Mrs. Stnchomb. were on their way from the Hydes home in Riverdale to Alma and had reached a point just west of Alma when their car crashed into the rear of a loaded beet truck which was en route to the factory and was driven by Clinton Pease from south of Alma. The truck driver called passersby who rushed the victims to Carney-Wilcox Hospital where it was found that Mrs. Stinchcomb had died from a broken neck immediately after the cars came together. Mrs. Hyde suffered a compound fracture of the right forearm, many lacerations and severe bruises and possible internal injuries. She is still in a grave condition but it is believed that she will recover if nothing unexpected comes up to complicatematters. Mr. Hyde had lacerations about the face and arms and is badly bruised and shaken up.
The Hydes live at Riverdale where he is an implement dealer. They have three small children. Mrs. Stinchcomb had been visiting her sister and family for a few
days,: but as the three were only planning to spend the evening in Alma, her baby boy was at the Hyde home with their children.
Coroner G. V. Wright was summoned and he called Prosecuting Attorney Stagley Greene of Ithaca, Chief of Police J. R. Campbell, Deputy George Brown and Wesley Chaffin. A coroner's jury was impanelled including John Davenport, E. J. Stevens, W. E. Moody, L. I. Hannig and W. H. Redman and the group made necessary inspections at the scene of the accident. The verdict given by them was death by accidental injury.
Kendall Stinchcomb, husband of the dead woman, was summoned from Lansing where he is employed and news of his young wifes passing was a sad blow. Her death leaves Mr. Stinchcomb with a small baby son to rear. It is being cared for at the home of the grandmother, Mrs. Mabelle Stinchcomb on Gratiot avenue, Alma.
Funeral rites for the deceased were held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon at Wrights Faneral Home and a large crowd of relatives and friends was in attendance. A wealth of beautiful flowers attested to the affection and esteem which many held for the young woman and she was laid to rest in the Stinchcomb family lot at Riverside Cemetery leaving many sad hearts among those who knew her. Mrs. Verne Lowden and Mrs. Bert Reynolds conducted a Science service and Mrs. Minnie Green sang "Good-night and Good Morning" with sweetness and feeling.
Before her marriage Mrs. Stinchcomb was Dorothea Vallance, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Vallance of Riverdale. She was born May 26,1912 and was one of a family of ten children. Childhood and girlhood years were passed in the Riverdale community and Dorothea was a graduate of the high school there. Later she was employed at the Masonic Home in Alma and made a wide circle of friends both at the Home and in the community. While in Alma she met and married Kendall Stinchcomb and the young couple continued to make their home here.
The deceased leaves her husband and baby, her parents, and the brothers and sisters who are Chester, Mrs. Frank Hyde, Clayton, Helen, Gertrude. Junior, Alvin, Ray, Allen and an infant brother. She is survived also by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Cassius Erskin and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Vallance. besides many aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends who sympathize with the family in their sad loss.
