Obituary:
Andy Spencer was a beautiful soul, happiest at home with his family, relaxing, listening to tunes, or reading a good book. His optimism and "dont sweat the small stuff" approach to life put everyone around him at ease.
Andy lived in several cities in Michigan growing up, graduating from Grand Ledge High School (90). Andy attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, where he studied mostly skiing. He returned to Michigan and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Computer Science in the College of Engineering with a minor in History. In September 1994, he met his next-door-neighbor, Karen, who became his wife and soulmate. Andy said a week after meeting Karen, "I think we are going to get married and do great things together." He was right. They were married for 20 years and share two amazing boys, Patrick and Ian. Karen and the boys brought Andy great joy, and spending time with his boys brightened his world. He was an integral part of the boys education, patiently helping them to master concepts and build self-confidence. He was always the boys biggest fan as well as coach. Coaching basketball for both boys and even taking on soccer for three years having never watched a game. Andy loved all sports, especially NFL football and his Spartans, where he shared his love for the Green and White with his wife, family, and friends.
Andys career began at the MSU Alumni Association. He then held various positions at Dow Chemical and IBM before landing a life-changing job at Kunz Leigh and Associates, culminating in his dream position as Director of Consulting. He dedicated 18 years to KL&A, where he considered his mentor, John Leigh, and colleagues as family.
Andy had a great love for the outdoors and especially fishing of any kind. His adventures would take him from favorite local spots to thrilling trips with friends at remote locations in Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Andy played in many golf leagues where for him, the fun and the lasting friendships surpassed his score.
Andy had a gentle heart for all animals but a soft spot for Golden Retrievers, including Belle, who he considered his third child. His vision and attention to detail helped create a beautiful retreat in his yard that he enjoyed sharing with family and friends.
Known only to his family were his hidden talents. He was the Ace of Cakes, planning and constructing elaborate birthday cakes for the boys. During family trips, he would find the best pinball arcades, tacos, live music and other surprises for the family. He and Karen memorably traveled to Florence, where always the history buff, Andy read every plaque in every city.
Preceding Andy in death were his grandparents, Jack and Ardeth Spencer and Alfred and Alice Farr; his dear brother, Jack Spencer; and his closest friend, Bobby Colagross. He is survived by his wife and partner in crime, Karen Tynan-Spencer; sons, Patrick and Ian; father, Larry (Debra) Spencer; mother, Sharon (Phil) Kalina; step-brother, Big Andy Spencer; adoring nieces and nephews; and loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
Andy lived by the Golden Rule, and treated others with kindness and respect. He tried not to take life too seriously, bringing a little humor to every day. Andys loving and kind spirit will live on through his children and family.
