Petoskey man killed in one-car crash
SPRINGVALE TWP. - A Petoskey area man was killed early Saturday in a one-car crash on East Mitchell Road, and the driver of vehicle remains hospitalized today in stable condition. Killed was John Patrick Hrabal, 24, of North Conway Road, Petoskey, according to the Emmet County Sheriff's Department. Hrabal's roommate, Martin Lawrence Zoppa, 25, was the driver of the 1988 Chevrolet Blazer, police said. The accident occurred at 12:15 a.m. Saturday on East Mitchell Road near Wildwood Road. The men were headed north and had come off of I-75, police said. Zoppa was driving his Blazer northbound on Mitchell Road when the vehicle left the roadway on a curve, struck several trees and rolled over, police said. The vehicle came to rest upside-down. The crash resulted in the top of the vehicle being smashed down and flush with the body, police said. The Resort Bear Creek Fire Department was called to the scene with its jaws of life extraction machine, which was used to pry open the wreckage to get to the men. Hrabal and Zoppa were taken by Life+Link Inc. ambulance service to Little Traverse Division of Northern Michigan Hospitals Inc., Petoskey. Hrabal was pronounced dead on arrival. Zoppa was admitted to the hospital and is in stable condition. The Springvale Township Fire Department also assisted the sheriff's department at the scene. The sheriffs department said the accident was alcohol-related. Both men were wearing seat belts, police said. An Alma native, Hrabal had lived in the Petoskey area for two months, moving here from Breckenridge.
